FROM MY HEADPHONES TO YOU

Weird year for music but here's my top 10 list from the annual Village Voice Pazz & Jop poll. Probably should have put the OFF! album higher since that shit shreds but what can you do? I'm sure there are lots of things I forgot. I probably spent more time this year listening to albums from the Epitaph Records discography such as Bad Religion, NOFX, Down By Law and Rancid than anything else while working on my oral history of Epitaph story for Spin magazine.

Here's what I've been listening to lately:

1. Dave Hause "Resolutions" -Solo album from former Loved Ones frontman. Manages to avoid a lot of the Springsteen cliches that are floating around out there these days.

2. Iron & Wine "Kiss Each Other Clean" -Trying to get this to grow on me. Needs less funk, more folk.

3. Justin Townes Earle "Harlem River Blues" -Son of Steve Earle makes the best NYC country I can recall. "One More Night in Brooklyn" is fantastic.

4. Chamberlain "Raise It High" EP -Saw this Indiana band a lot when I lived in Chicago and their new single is amazing. Hope there's an album in the works.

5. Jesu "Heart Ache & Dethroned" -Combines two EPs from the king of shoegazing sludge. Think Joy Division as a metal band.
